Luxembourgish Flag Debate

In Flags on December 30, 2010 at 4:08 pm

The flag of Luxembourg is very similar to the flag of the Netherlands with the only difference being the colours of the red and blue and the ratio (Netherlands= 2:3 Luxembourg= 3:5.) This can cause a problem because some Luxembourgish product might be mistaken for being Dutch or vise-versa.

This caused a bit of Discussion in Luxembourg in Autumn  2006. MP Michael Wolter of Luxembourg introduced a proposition which says that the red-white-blue flag should be replaced with the Ensign for Aviation and Ships (image below.) He Argued that the ensign was more popular among citizens of Luxembourg, was more aesthetic and was of greater historical value (it being based on the coat of arms of Luxembourg which has been using a similar design since 1216.) Wolter also claimed that he had personally discussed with about 300 people and most of which thought the change was a good idea.

One problem with this proposal is that the near-by Belgian province of Luxembourg and the German state of Hesse use a similar design which might cause the same problem as the Dutch-Luxembourgish flag mixup
